How to Set Up Slack Alerts for Website Downtime

October 12, 2026 · 5 min read

Why Slack instead of an inbox

Email alerts disappear into folders and digests. A downtime alert is time-sensitive by nature, and Slack puts it in front of the people who can act, next to the rest of your team conversation. The trick is to wire it so you get the alert once, when it matters, and not a flood while the issue lasts.

Create a dedicated channel first

Make a channel called something like #alerts or #incidents, and pin the runbook there. Do not fall back to #general: alert chatter blurs into general chatter, and the whole point is that this channel is loud and lives outside your daily noise.

Generate the incoming webhook

In Slack, go to your workspace settings, find Incoming Webhooks, and add the webhook to the alert channel you just created. Slack gives you a URL that ends in /hooks/... - that URL is the only thing your monitoring needs. Treat it like a credential: it lets anyone post into that channel.

Connect it in UptimeCadet

In UptimeCadet, open Settings, add a Slack notification, and paste the webhook URL. Alerts arrive as notifications from your channel members. Slack, like Telegram and Discord, is a paid-plan channel in UptimeCadet - email alerts are free, chat alerts are for Pro and Business, so the setup stays honest about what the free tier includes.

Test the loop before you trust it

Do not wait for a real outage. Create a monitor for a URL you control, trigger a failure, and confirm the alert lands in the channel - and, just as important, that the recovery notice lands too. That round trip proves the wiring, the threshold, and the message format all at once.

Combining channels without doubling noise

Alerts fire on transitions: once when a monitor goes down and once when it recovers. That design already prevents flooding. If you add more channels than Slack - email, Telegram, a second team room - keep them for severity levels that matter to different people, and let the alert group settings decide who gets paged for which monitor.
